Looking to cut back on the electric bill and wondering if anyone has made similar cutbacks and do you know or have an idea what it cut your bill by approximately?

Best answer:

Answer by Teri
1. replace all your light bulbs with CFL or LED light bulbs
2. Unplug all electrical items you are not using, For example put your microwave, Coffee maker, or other small kitchen Appliances on a surge protector with an on off switch, then when you leave for the day turn off the surge protector and turn it back on when you get home
3. upgrade your insulation or windows, get a programable thermostat

Energy Efficiency and Kitchen Appliances

Start making your effort to reduce your carbon footprint and save money at the same time. If you're shopping for a new dishwasher, cooker, fridge freezer or oven, always look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo. They will cost less to run and help reduce carbon emissions.

Refrigeration - Side by side fridge freezers use more energy than similarly sized models with the freezer on top, even if they both carry the ENERGY STAR on board. The government holds the two categories to different standards, allowing side-by-sides to use 10-30% more energy. Icemakers and through-the-door ice also add to energy consumption.

In cooking, when it comes to choosing the fuel type, gas is usually preferable to electricity as a heating fuel. But because cooking doesn't make a huge overall impact on your energy bill, this choice has more to do with your own preference. Many people find that gas offers better cooking control; however, it also introduces combustion products into the house that must be vented to the outside. Be sure to purchase an energy-efficient range hood that vents cooking products up from the cooktop and directly outside (avoid down-draft vents).

The EU Energy Rating measures energy efficiency on a seven point scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The rating covers a variety of household appliances including fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers, washing machines, electric tumble driers, combined washer-driers, lamps, electric ovens and air conditioners. By law, all retailers in the EU must display an energy efficiency rating on these products. A product with an A rating will have passed a rigorous, impartial testing procedure, so you can be sure of its high energy efficiency.

If everyone in the UK upgraded their old refrigeration appliance to an A-rated, energy efficient product, energy wastage would be cut by over two-thirds. Buying an energy efficient fridge freezer to replace your inefficient model could cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 296 kilos a year.

Also, why not consider applying for a grant, availble to many people throughout the UK. The UK Government funds schemes providing up to £2,700 to households on certain benefits (see below for examples of eligibility criteria) to improve their heating and energy efficiency. In England the scheme is known as Warm Front, in Northern Ireland it is Warm Homes, in Scotland it is Warm Deal and the Central Heating Programme and in Wales it is the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme. The eligibility criteria for the schemes differ between countries - with some schemes you need to be in receipt of certain benefits, whilst others are available to anyone over a certain age.

Energy Efficient Windows

A typical house loses 20% of its heat through the windows. This means that you are also losing 20% of the money you pay on your heating through your windows. Many window companies class their windows on a scale known as the Energy Index. This index rates products on a scale of A to E where A is the most efficient and E is the least.

The Energy Index shows how much energy the window will save or lose once it has been installed. Of course this valuable also has variants and it will depend on the building, local climate and indoor temperature of the place where the window is installed.

A positive value means the window will enable more energy [free heat] to pass through the glass and into the room than is going to be lost through the window, therefore the window is a 'free energy' supplier.

Double glazed windows cost different amounts according to many different variables of the window i.e. it could be a different size use safety glass or having a special design. The cost of a window is dependent on how special it is. This cost also varies between the various ratings [A to E] As a guide it can be said that A rated windows will cost more than B, C, D and E rated windows, however this cost can be negated as it should be set against the energy savings you will make as you go up the ratings scale. You should also take into account the face that Energy Efficient Windows cost less than the heat you will be losing from a less energy efficient alternative over a period of time.

So in fact the best plan is to buy the highest rated window that you can afford as it will mean that your heating bills will be lower in the long run.

In addition to the Energy Index rating there are also new components that have been developed to insulate the glass. These can create an even more energy efficient glass.

Energy efficient windows make sense, they conserve energy and will save you money in the long run.

Obama's Savannah Stump Has Legs
President Obama championed a minor provision of the energy bill in Savannah in March. That provision is now one of the last standing in the energy bill. Senate Democrats have backed-off their plans for a major energy bill, opting instead for more politically passable provision like HomeStar. It would offer rebates for energy-efficient home improvements like air conditioners and duct work. read ...
