Question by jay: The Sanchez household is about to install solar panels to reduce the cost of heating their house. ?
In order to know how much the solar panels help, they record their consumption of natural gas before the panels are installed. Gas consumption is higher in cold weather, so the relationship between outside temperature and gas consumption is important. Here are data for 12 consecutive months:
Degree days193300081127463834
Gas used3221.610.70.71.63.15.17.776.1
Use your calculator or software: the correlation between degree days and overall gas usd is about

Question by EnsignLefler: What kind of solar household can benefit from Time-Of-Use (TOU) metering?
My electricity provider is PG&E in California.
My solar panels can only provide 80% of my energy needs.
On a typical workday, no one is home between 8-3:30.
Our overall energy costs is higher during the winter.
Best answer:
Answer by KoonsieTime of use metering is fantastic so long as you are well aware of the risks. TOU may charge you half price for electricity that you use in the evening but for the electricity you use during peak hours (7-4) may charge [...]
The discussion on the risks of nuclear power and hoped for alternatives has gone global as a result of the catastrophe in Japan. A startup in Feldafing near Munich enters the debate right on time. The Smart Hydro Power company develops hydroelectric facilities for household use .The small device can be installed in almost any stream – and interest has been immediate: farmers who’d like to generate their own electricity, generating station operators and even politicians form Peru, Angola and Brazil have all expressed interest. Question by Pixie: Are there grants for alternative energy household sources (i.e. solar panels)?
Our household electricity is going up 25%. Where we use about half the kilowatt hours than we did last year, we’re still paying about the same each bill, so I was trying to think of alternative energy sources (not gas). However, someone told me solar panels were REALLY expensive, and so was a small windmill (although I don’t think I could get a permit for a windmill, cause we have neighbors fairly close by). So, do you know of any alternative (viable) [...]
Question by Seymore Pickles: How do you build a solar panel out of household objects?
I’m doing my science fair project on solar energy and i need to know how to make a solar panel out of household objects. I found a website that said it is possible to build one out of a box, paint, plastic, and aluminum foil but I can’t find out how.
