How much petroleum do you think it takes to produce a wind turbine? (shipping parts, painting the structure, plastic parts, installation, manufacturing, shipping of raw materials for manufacturing, mining for the metals, transporting those mined metals, mining for the magnetic parts, shipping those magnetic parts, drilling for the petroleum used to make parts of the wind turbines in the first place, shipment of the drilling platforms, transportation of the petroleum from those platforms…? How much would ya guess?)

Answer by BlacksheepI’m not so sure about the cost, but from what I’ve read on it, it costs too much for it to be worth it. so unless you are out in the middle of nowhere without power, I personally wouldn’t recommend it.

Answer by CinqueIt depends on the materials and the device like any utilization. In general, solar photovoltaic devices have a lower % compared to solar thermal energy (25% for photovoltaics and solar thermal energy depends on the medium used to transfer the energy so from 40% for basic steam turbines to about 98% for molten salts)

I am going to be buying a condo, which means I have to buy new appliances. I have been looking at prices online for fridges, dishwashers, stoves, washer/dryers….
How much money would I save if I buy energy star appliances (fridge, dishwasher, dryer)? Is it worth shelling out the extra bucks for these appliances? They are at least 200$ more expensive than the “regular” appliances.

I’m wondering if you total up all the electricity a plant making solar panels uses in a year, the energy the workers take to travel to their jobs each day, the energy used to transport the finished product to consumers and finally the energy used to install them and then compare it to the energy all of these panels will produce during their 20 year life will anything be gained?
Or would be have been ahead to just not bother making the panels in the first [...]
